About

Hi, my name is Matthew. My personal finance “origin story” started just before I left for college. My mom asked me if there was anything I still needed to know to make it on my own. I assured her that she had prepared me well. But I said I wanted to know a little more about money.

So my mom did what my mom does: She gave me a bunch of books.

I can’t remember all of them, but one was The Millionaire Next Door, one was Your Money or Your Life, and one was a Dave Ramsey book. I devoured these books eagerly and since then have spent countless hours consuming books, blogs, and podcasts as well as creating my own spreadsheets and conducting my own personal experiments in the arena of money management.

I’m a teacher at heart, and I’m happy to share all of the most important lessons and best insights I’ve gleaned from more than fifteen years of obsession.

While the “personal” aspect of personal finance can introduce nearly endless complexity, I truly believe that the foundational principles can be stated clearly and simply. I contend that personal finance can be summed up in less than 10 words: Spend less than you earn and invest the difference. This site exists to build out the details of that core premise.
